info@carolinajuniors.com CJV Becomes a Gold Medal Squared Certified Club In January of 2008 the CJV Traveling Team Coaches spent three days training in the GMS methodology of coaching volleyball. Chris McGown, the principal clinician for Club Coaching events at GMS, was the lead clinician for the clinic held in Charlotte. Chris is the son of Carl McGown who is the founder of Gold Medal Square and a consultant with the USA Men’s National Team. In January of 2009 CJV welcomed Ron Larsen, First Assistant Coach, USA Gold Medalist Men’s Team, and GMS Coach, who conducted a two day Player/Coach Clinic which reinforced the winning Gold Medal systems. This clinic combined coach training with player development which provided a unique way for our coaches to get the practical experience of coaching their players under the direction of a superb GMS coach. Ron Larsen most recently took over for the U.S. Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon at the 2008 Olympic Games after McCutcheon’s father-in-law was killed and his mother-in-law was gravely injured by an attacker while sightseeing in Beijing, China. Larsen coached the team to three pool play victories against Venezuela, Italy, and Bulgaria before McCutcheon returned to the team. Of course, the USA team went on to win the Olympic Gold Medal for the first time since 1988.
CJV plans
to make the Gold Medal Squared Clinic for Players and Coaches an annual
event and will consult with both Chris and Ron on a regular basis
throughout the club season.
A HUGE Thank you to
Ron Larsen for the amazing clinic he
held for our Traveling Teams this past weekend (1/23-24, 2010).
